Geography

Geography teaches an understanding of places and environments – our pupils love to find out about the world around them. Children have the opportunity to explore the local area using fieldwork and compass skills; they will consider how their lives compare with that in other regions of the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world. Key geographical knowledge will be developed, with a focus on learning the continents, five oceans and capital cities. They learn how to draw and interpret maps (at Key Stage 1 this is also developed through our Forest Schools work) and they develop the skills of research, investigation, analysis and problem-solving. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of human geography, children gain an appreciation of life in other cultures. Geography teaching also motivates children to find out about the physical world around them; it enables them to recognise the importance of sustainable development for the future of mankind.

We realise the value of children experiencing things first hand, which is why we make sure every child has the opportunity to undertake a field study or geography based trip during their time at Litcham.
